Digital Accessibility 101

Do you want to ensure your training content is accessible?

Have you been asked to make your training accessible, but don’t know where to start?

Do you find yourself asking 'What is digital accessibility'?

If you answered “yes” to these questions, then register for Digital Accessibility 101 According to the Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT), “accessibility means that everyone can use the exact same technology as anyone else—regardless of whether they can manipulate a mouse, how much vision they have, how many colors they can see, how much they can hear or how they process."

This interactive session will focus on why we should care about accessibility, and it will provide a framework for thinking about how to make content accessible. You’ll walk away with resources that you can implement in your practice right away.

Speakers: Colette J. De Nardo and Jessica Andrea Giraldo

NOTE: Please bring your laptop for group work.

Attend this session to learn how to:

  • Identify reasons why creating accessible content is important
  • Describe a framework for thinking about how to make content accessible
  • Demonstrate accessibility best practices in creating training content

Colette J. De Nardo is a Sr. Learning and Development Specialist with Weatherby Healthcare, a division of CHG Healthcare (CHG), and has been in learning and development for over 15 years.

She is a passionate diversity, equity and inclusion ally, serving on CHG’s DEI Committee and assisting CHG’s DEI Department with implementing their company-wide L&D Roadmap. Colette co-moderated CHG’s roundtable for Americans with Developmental Disabilities month and strives to bring DEI to each training initiative she creates.

In addition, she designs eLearning and virtual instructor-led training and supports Weatherby’s sales teams. She is also a registered yoga teacher, helping others find their breath and center so they can feel their best.

Jessica Andrea Giraldo is an instructional designer at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

What motivates her as an educator is seeing the lightbulb go off over someone's head; helping them finally grasp a concept or technique that has eluded them for so long. Through classroom and virtual training, one-on-one coaching, and online programs, she has helped people leverage technology to achieve more. She’s also led strategic communication efforts that inform and delight audiences.

In her current role, she supports the university’s accessibility initiative by developing faculty and staff’s capacity to use technology to create more accessible content.

Jessica is an FIU alumnus holding a B.A. in Communication and brings experience in legal, marketing, and information technology. Outside of the office, Jessica plays and coaches roller derby and helps manage the league's nonprofit business.
