Training Needs Assessment: Something Borrowed, Something New

Training needs assessment is an essential component of the training design and delivery cycle. A thorough understanding of organizational needs equips us to design and deliver effective training, which in turn leads to improved individual and organizational performance that addresses those needs.. A top-notch needs assessment sets participants, organizations, and trainers up for success.  

Dr. David Kopp will take you through the processes and outcomes of training needs assessment.  His presentation includes discussions on the overall purpose of training assessment and preparation required to conduct needs assessments. He will guide you through the traditional and new approaches to training needs assessment, both at the individual and organizational levels.

Presentation objectives:

  •  Explore the purpose of training needs assessments
  •  Define the process of conducting training needs assessments
  •   Become familiar with the traditional and new approaches to needs assessments
  •  Appreciate the link between training needs assessments and performance improvement

Presenter: David M. Kopp, Ph.D.

David M. Kopp holds a Ph.D. in Human Resource Development and is a Professor and Associate Dean at Barry University’s School of Education.  Prior to Barry University, Dr. Kopp was head of Human Resources for two large organizations, one in Los Angeles and the other in Charlotte, North Carolina. 

Dr. Kopp has worked with both profit and non-profit organizations for over 25 years focusing on leadership development, strategic planning, organizational change and performance improvement.  He has published numerous articles and two academic books, the latest in August 2017 on the social history of training and development published by Palgrave MacMillan. 

Dr. Kopp earned the CPLP credential (Certified Professional in Learning and Performance) and was Dr. Shaquille O’Neal’s doctoral advisor and major professor. He resides in Hollywood, Florida with his wife, Sandra, who is a school principal.
