Engaging Activities to Build Communication Skills - Natasha Roberts

In virtual, in-person, or remote environments we are sometimes called on to help our learners develop their communication skills to address different circumstances. In this quick session, we will practice two activities as learner and discuss how we can adapt them as facilitators to different training modes: virtual, in person, and hybrid.

Natasha Roberts is the director for global learning and development at Helen Keller International. She leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of staff development and training programs in service of the internal employees in Africa and Asia.  Prior to joining Helen Keller Intl, she was the senior director of talent development at the Urban Institute. She was responsible for Urban’s talent development strategy and efforts to develop a more robust performance- and learning-driven program for staff that includes enhanced performance management capabilities. She planned, facilitated, designed, and developed training and development activities to support Urban initiatives and led organizational development efforts to improve career pathing, internal mobility, and performance management. Before joining Urban, Roberts was a senior associate for training and development at Chemonics International Inc. and before that, she held positions at UNICEF, Kaplan Test Prep, the United States Mission to the United Nations, and the International Institute for Sustainable Development.

Natasha has expertise in coaching, mentoring, supervising, and designing training programs on topics ranging from management and leadership to budgeting and proposal writing. She was an active leader in the Metro DC ATD chapter as a board member between 2017 and 2019 and the co-leader of the instructional design community of practice between 2016 and 2019. She received her MA in international relations at the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations and is a Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD).

Heart Smart Facilitation - Pam Evans

Effective trainers understand that being “heart smart” is vital to their success. Emotional intelligence plays a significant role in making you able to influence, inspire and develop people around you. During this 30-minute session we will identify strategies to create a safe environment for learning to occur. As facilitators, we may be put in situations or experience behaviors that trigger us.

Discover how your emotional barometer reveals much to you about your style of facilitation and how you can deal more effectively with participants. The bottom line is…how well you tolerate stress, handle change, express your emotions, and interact with others in the classroom are all influenced by EI. Learn strategies to be a heart smart facilitator.

Creating Extended Learning Experiences that Drive Learner Application - Eric Fields

The days are gone where learners come to sit in a classroom for 8 hours and be taught new content. Today, Learners expect their time to be well used and expect to take away practical skills through multi-touch training experiences that encourage use of the skills not only in the classroom but during the course of work.  To make extended learning experiences effective, both design and delivery must be considered and the learner must be placed at the center of the design.

Eric Fields is a 25+ year talent and learning professional. Currently, Eric is is in his 9th year leading the talent development and learning function as the Managing Director of Training Delivery and Systems Operations Excellence at ChenMed.  ChenMed is the fastest growing full risk healthcare provider changing the face of the American Healthcare system by providing innovative concierge style healthcare for low to middle income seniors.

Eric started his career in training for American Airlines at Flagship University delivering and designing training for passenger service.  After September 11th,  Eric transitioned to leadership training and organizational design work at Kaiser Permanente and broke new ground by designing innovative eLearning for physicians to improve clinical outcomes.  After Kaiser Permanente, Eric worked for Coventry/Aetna Healthcare in organizational design, leadership effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.

At ChenMed, Eric implemented several learning management systems, built a learning team from the ground up, and most recently transitioned the organization’s training programs to a virtual experience in less than a week during the pandemic. As the business continued to grow and the pandemic eased, Eric influenced the organization to maintain a live virtual delivery model for nearly every sector of ChenMed’s training functions with greater participant interaction and engagement. He is excited to share his experience and lessons learned in implementing Class.com as an immersive training delivery tool.
