Delivering Tough Messages with Respect and Tact

During the times of the unknown and the economic uncertainty, many leaders are faced with organizational changes that require a great skill navigating human emotions with respect and tact. Difficult conversations that support and challenge employees in such times is a daily undertake of many leaders, and if the conversations are not handled right it may leave a negative impact not only on an employee’s performance, but also on a working relationship.

Over the last 30 years, Capital Reef Associates, Inc (CRA) has studied more than 12,000 leaders to uncover what world-class leaders do that is special and different and that other leaders simply miss. The research resulted in a compilation of foundational routines and behaviors of excellence called Admired Leadership®. In this presentation, Suzanne Peterson and Leticia Hartmann will cover a set of behaviors that Admired Leaders® use when having tough conversations.

  • Discuss how Admired Leaders® think about and communicate intentionally and strategically  
  • Explore approaches to effective feedback to driving performance and accountability
  • Discover strategies to stabilizing while embracing organizational changes (crisis, layoffs)
Presenters: Leticia Hartmann and Suzanne Peterson, Ph.D.


As a Managing Director in CRA's Leadership practice, Leticia Hartmann provides coaching and counsel for Fortune 500s and startups. Leticia is a seasoned leader with expertise in advising and managing multi-cultural global teams across a wide range of industries. With an extensive international and corporate background, Leticia is uniquely equipped to partner with executives and entrepreneurs to explore innovative strategies to maximize potential. She has worked with leaders in organizations including Microsoft, Facebook, IBM, Novartis, BlackRock, Oppenheimer, The Carlyle Group, Point72, QiO, and Havas Media.


Suzanne J. Peterson is a Partner at CRA and an Executive Coach specializing in Leadership Style, Development, and Communication. Dr. Peterson provides counsel and coaching to senior leaders primarily on Wall Street and other financial services companies. Emphasizing leadership style and credibility, effective communication, and relationship building as building blocks to leadership success, she helps propel her clients towards excellence. Her recent clients include leaders in firms such as Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan Chase, Charles Schwab, Cowen, BlackRock, Piper Jaffray, Fidelity, Prudential, and Bank of America/Merrill Lynch.
